Something doesn't smell right.
Why are Russia's main stories lately ones of sabre-rattling, partial regime change, and new armaments?
When you're a poor country starving for recognition as a major world power, it's almost understandable that you'll feature any new developments that you can on the international news. Sort of a "Hey! We're still here!" Often the only thing that some countries have to show off is their military, and advances for same.
But this gives me an... unstable feeling.

I agree. After all, Vlad's an old KGB hound. Old habits die hard.
I get a funny feeling that new FAE is going to get its next test over some tenement complex in Chechnya if not over the Georgian Parliament building.

It's more than mental muscle flexing...partnering with China and NK to bolster its coffers and reach has me very worried, indeed.
If you don't count the Faberge eggs and Tolstoy (and I certainly don't), what's the last thing other than sabre-rattling the Russians thought fit to share with the class? Looks like history may not have "ended," after all.
It's a weird way to market your World-Brand, unless as comatus says, that IS the brand...
Isn't "Dad" just an upscaled version of MOAB? They want to sell it to the Crips and Bloods of the world - like Mugabe and Chavez...
But, back in the '80s, things made SENSE. Russia was the Evil Empire, the US was the Good Guys...
dirtcrashr, this new russki bomb seems to be a fuel-air explosive; the russians have been quite fond of that technology for a good while now. the air force's MOAB, unless i'm badly misinformed, is a plain old huge chunk of solid explosives, and not an FAE.
Unstable is a good word for it. They want a fight. Preferably with us.
I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but Russia is rolling in oil money now...
They are putting their SSBN subs back to sea, and they are loaded. While the bombers are not, it is only a matter of time. With a lot of our attention diverted, manpower down, and no longer having a capability to fight a two front limited conflict, Russia and China both are out building us. There is a very real potential that we will be far enough behind that we cannot catch up.
